I remeber when I first saw the advertisments for Ex Machina. I was truely freaked out. I didnt really think of it as a big deal either. Weeks later I somewhat looked it up again. This time I was excited.Being a true geek of Oscar Isaac's work so far, it was easy for me to love his performance, it was almost as he wasnt acting at all - I love it when actors can do that- he just was that person in the movie and very convincing doing so. Same for Domhnall Gleeson; little roles like in "Never Let me go" as well as "Shadow Dancer" brought him my attention. Now after many more performances of him, I am impressed how easily he could take over me as an audience with his current performance as Caleb in the movie.
Going into the actual story line of Ex Machina; I had big expectations on this little movie. And I fully got what I wanted. Being a big fan of Alex Garland's writing so far, I truely am impressed of his debut in directing. The story is about Caleb (Gleeson) who joins the experiment started by Nathan(Isaac) far away in isolation, which makes the viewer aware just how intense it will get very early on. Caleb being the first other human, to work with Ava (Alicia Vikander) a machine yet a functional human in mind -female A.I - is breathtaking.
You see Caleb questioning his beliefs and hopes in as well around the posibility of a human mind, functional as well as responsive as Ava, who is willing or not to notice it, from the other sex.
It's like you can see him getting so excited, and almost blind, its amazing to see how human relations work, how easily he got fixed on the idea of her being human.
Enjoying how the story grows as well as how suspicious you as a viewer become after a while is a great experience that I haven't felt for a while. You begin to question certain actions of the characters, which truly is human.
Yet not wanting to give away the whole story or ending; meaning I stop now.
This movie proofs again that all you need is a good story, cast and screenplay. It's not always about movie, box office or anything similar. It's simply about the story.
I can truly say, this movie is amazing. I can only think of little things I wished he would have done differently, but those are just from my perspective. Otherwise this movie is without any flaws.
Hope you enjoy the cinema as much as me recently :)
Happy Sunday,
B
